Understanding Dialysis: What It Is and What to Expect

For many patients and families, the word 'dialysis' brings fear and uncertainty. But dialysis is simply a treatment that does the job your kidneys can no longer do well enough — removing waste, extra salt and excess fluid from your blood. Knowing how it works can replace fear with confidence.

When is dialysis needed?

Dialysis is usually considered when kidney function falls to a very low level (advanced or end-stage kidney disease), or in some cases of severe, sudden kidney injury. The decision is based on your blood tests and symptoms together — never on a single number alone — and your nephrologist will plan the timing carefully with you.

Haemodialysis

In haemodialysis, your blood is gently circulated through a machine with a special filter that cleans it and returns it to your body. It is typically done a few times a week, either at a dialysis centre or, for some patients, at home. Each session usually lasts a few hours, during which you can rest, read or talk.

Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis uses the natural lining of your own abdomen as a filter. A cleansing fluid is passed into the abdomen, absorbs waste, and is then drained out. Much of it can be done at home — even overnight while you sleep — which gives many patients greater independence and flexibility in daily life.

Living well on dialysis

Many people continue to work, travel and spend time with family while on dialysis. Eating well, following fluid and diet advice, taking medicines on time and attending sessions regularly all help you feel your best. Your care team is there to support not just your body, but your confidence and quality of life.

You are not alone

Starting dialysis is a big step, but it is a well-trodden path with strong support around you. If you or a loved one has been told dialysis may be needed, a calm, clear consultation can answer your questions and help you choose the option that fits your life best.
